The winner of a 2009 Lumen Citation in the Featured Visual Element category, New York financial firm GSC Group’s stylish new offices have received an abundance of media attention. The main visual feature in this project’s design is a two-story digital artwork piece that wraps the core of the floor plate, connecting reception, offices, conference rooms and a trading floor and humanizing a highly functional setting with the look of an upscale boutique hotel. CBB Principal Stephen Bernstein used an innovative LED scheme to evenly backlight the artwork, bringing its digitized imagery of Central Park to life.

Slocum Hall, Syracuse Univeristy

Slocum Hall, Syracuse University Featured in AIA New York’s Oculus Magazine

The Spring 2009 Issue of Oculus, the AIA New York Chapter’s quarterly magazine, showcases Slocum Hall at Syracuse University – a recent CBB project in association with Garrison Architects (NY). The article commends the design team’s expression of the historic building in a fresh, modern, “green” context, emphasizing daylighting, natural ventilation, and open, flexible-use spaces.

CBB developed the lighting design scheme for the refurbished building, which houses the University’s School of Architecture. The lighting honors the historic structure yet engages the students and faculty in a dialogue on 21st Century design. Our clean, modern design reinvigorates the landmarked Beaux Arts building, with a fixture budget of only $4.00/sf.

The renovation re-opened the five-story atrium, allowing daylight penetration. A key renovation principle was keeping the space visually open and making the atrium an extension of the classrooms. Originally the building contained a two story lecture hall. Reconceived, the volume is split horizontally in half with a new bamboo clad auditorium inserted and suspended above a flexible gallery space.

The lighting addresses the needs of each space, with ultimate flexibility for the gallery and architectural enhancement of the auditorium.

Henry Miller’s Theater featured May 4th in The New York Times

Designed in conjunction with the new LEED® Platinum (pending) One Bryant Park project, Henry Miller’s Theater will be the first new Broadway theater to open in more than 20 years and the first sustainably designed Broadway house. Energy efficient fluorescent, metal halide and halogen light sources are used to create a warm, comfortable interior environment and are linked to an automated lighting control system to reduce energy consumption over time. Salvaged architectural artifacts, such as doors and column capitals, from the original theater are highlighted with halogen spots in the new design, creating a link between the modern design and the theater’s past.
