Central Harlem STD Clinic Interior lighting

Lighting gives NY clinic new appeal

A recent renovation has transformed this traditional health center into a state-of-the-art clinic. The design of the new Central Harlem STD Clinic presents a welcoming, almost spa-like environment, in contrast to the institutional blandness often expected in a facility of this type. CBBLD’s lighting design is a key element contributing to the bright, reassuring environment in this modern, community health resource. In 2010, the project has won an IES Illumination Award of Merit, as well as a Healthcare Facilities Design Award from The Boston Society of Architects.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Site Plan

Light for children’s healthcare

CBBLD has commenced work on the complete lighting design of a new Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The project’s lighting work encompasses both interior and exterior lighting for the eight-story ACC, five below-ground parking levels, and the building’s landscaped site. CBBLD joins a consultant team led by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (Design Architect) and FKP, Inc. (Architect of Record) on this important project, which will help to grow the nation’s increasingly crucial public healthcare infrastructure.

Lighting design, up close and personal

CBBLD Principal Francesca Bettridge, along with many projects from her award-winning portfolio, has received substantial acclaim in the design industry media this year. Architectural Lighting Magazine’s September isue provides yet another first-rate example: Francesca is the subject of editor Elizabeth Donoff’s regular interview feature, One-on-One. In a concise, pithy style, the short editorial aptly reflects Francesca’s insightful, creative and efficient approach to her work. The article is an excellent snapshot of CBBLD’s approach to lighting design.

Sharing green design knowledge

Mitul Parekh, CBBLD Associate and LEED® Accredited Professional, will teach a course on daylighting at the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) as part of its 2010 curriculum. The class is part of the new MPS (Master of Professional Studies) in Sustainable Interior Environments program offered by the school, starting this Fall. The program recognizes a growing demand for “green” design expertise within the industry. The daylighting course will bring the benefits of Mitul’s knowledge to new designers – and to tomorrow’s buildings.

MGM Resorts International CityCenter Vdara Hotel and Spa

Vdara’s lighting shines in Vegas

The design of Las Vegas’ $8.5 billion, 18 million square foot MGM CityCenter has generated widespread media acclaim since this complex opened in 2009. Architectural Record Magazine’s August 2010 issue is the first to focus exclusively on the lighting which is so crucial to CityCenter’s architectural success. The article examines lighting design for key buildings, including the luxury hotel Vdara, whose lighting CBBLD designed. In particular, CBBLD’s creative approach to lighting the hotel tower’s unique façade configuration is explored.

Historic grandeur in a modern light

The refurbished Ocean House – Watch Hill, Rhode Island’s grand, beachfront hotel – exemplifies CBBLD Principal Stephen Bernstein’s expertise in lighting design for historic building renovations. The project was recently featured in American Express Platinum Card’s Departures (July/August 2010 issue), and has been hailed locally and nationally for its faithful recreation of Victorian-era design in a contemporary, upscale context. In the same spirit, the hotel’s lighting demonstrates the thoughtful and imaginative usage of modern fixtures and technology, in a celebration of the famed old hotel’s heritage. View article

One Bryant Park lobby

Green lighting reaches new heights

CBBLD was a key player in the design of One Bryant Park, the country’s first skyscraper to obtain a LEED® Platinum rating. Lighting was critical in achieving this ambitious goal, while still fulfilling the Owner’s and the Architect’s aesthetic vision. Challenges included designing energy-efficient illumination for the building’s triple-height lobby, glass tower exterior and top spire, whose combined height reaches 1,200 feet. New York’s Mayor Bloomberg and former Vice President Al Gore (who is a tenant of the new tower) attended the building’s grand opening gala in May 2010.

CBBLD presents at global symposium

CBBLD Principal Francesca Bettridge will speak at the Expo Lighting America (ELA) symposium, to be held in February 2011 in Mexico City, Mexico. ELA’s annual conference, which hosts professionals in architecture, engineering, construction and building development, is the only event of this type in Latin America to be dedicated wholly to lighting design. Francesca’s lecture will explore trends in architectural lighting today, the significance of the lighting designer’s role within project teams, and the importance of lighting design to a project’s ultimate success.
