A complete interior renovation transformed a traditional, coldly clinical health center into the tranquil and welcoming environment of a state-of-the-art STD facility. Lighting plays an instrumental part in creating the new clinic’s bright, reassuring atmosphere.
Diffuse light sources used throughout create a soothing, ambient light without harsh shadows. In the main lobby, the lighting offers relief from a low ceiling by evoking a skylight effect. In front of the exterior punched windows, an interior diffusing screen of translucent resin obscures street-level views, providing privacy for patients. The resin screen material is made by African women whose lives have been touched by HIV/AIDS, and provides these women with an income source.
Simple fixtures using a total of only four lamp types were specified, to help stretch a modest construction budget and minimize maintenance requirements. The project is designed to LEED® Silver standards of energy-efficiency.
